Pawn is a low budget crime thriller set in a diner which is robbed. Butthe robbers have bitten off a little bit more than they can chew andevents quickly spiral out of control as it turns out the diner theyhave robbed is owned by a mafia guy.

That's all I can tell you without spoiling the plot and that's the bestway to go into this movie - knowing as little as possible.

The opening sequence sets the movie up nicely for what later unfolds tobe a highly entertaining Streaming full of deception, conspiracy and twistsaplenty. It's tense and keeps you hooked right through until theclosing credits.

The best part of this film is the fact that just when you think you'regetting to grips with what's happening, you're hit with another twist.

The cast is strong with quite a few recognizable faces putting in goodperformances to contribute to a solid and well constructed script. Themajority of the movie takes place inside the diner but there is enoughgoing on within those walls to mask this fact.

Overall, I enjoyed this film. I went in knowing very little and cameout very impressed. I was entertained from start to finish which is allyou can really ask for.

Pawn will not win any awards, but if a good entertaining thriller isyour thing then you will not be disappointed 3.5/5

Firstly, I'm a Brit and Michael Chiklis' accent was spot on "geezaa"but, (that's a 'but' in capital letters) "But", the damn dialogue waswritten by a non Brit as is painfully obvious to my ears. Having a guycalled bloody 'Nigel'! Seriously! It's a bit stereotypical (if only toBrits) as is saying "geezer" (or 'geezaa') or even saying "love" aftereach sentence when addressing another adult. You don't point a"shootaa" (shooter) at a ladies head and then say "move over therelove", It's simply not done old chap. lol

First time director David A. Armstrong has worked on a lot of movies asa cinematographer among other things, so he obviously paid attention.He kept up a decent pace and never allowed any slack which for this tobe successful was paramount, because the final act took my "WillingSuspension of Disbelief" to new levels. If the majority of the filmhadn't been as good as it was the whole thing would have fallen apartat the end. However, it held thanks to a wonderful cast of which I knewjust about every main actor and a lot of the others. Some cast memberswere on screen far longer than some but isn't that the way with'straight to Blu-ray' flicks? The last film I saw Forrest Whitaker inwas the tidy little Indie 'Catch .44' where he also featured with NikkiReed. Even so, all the "names" got a chance to flex a bit of actingmuscle including Ray Liotta and Stephen Lang. I recently saw 'Last Exitto Brooklyn' with Stephen Lang and I gotta say, he was brilliant in it.Anyhoo, It's a good cast.

The bottom line is, patchy but decent enough writing, solid acting, nottoo sure about the actual casting, not the greatest set of charactersbut the overall production was quite good and kept me glued to thescreen.

Lots of star power, but when broken down, names like Forest Whitakerand Ray Liotta are only slightly involved within the film, but we doget a solid dose of Michael Chiklis. What seems to be a basic latenight armed robbery plan turns out to be more complex as the manyulterior motives surface. A top level crime boss operating out of thediner has saved information including the names, dates, jobs, payouts &details on basically everything that has gone down in the city in thelast 20 years. In fear of this list being revealed, a plan is set inmotion to recover said information before anyone can be exposed. Asimple job assigned to one person(M. Chiklis) evolves into a crew ofthugs who get greedy and go in ahead of schedule. Setting off a chainof events that shakes up the lives of a variety of different people asa tense standoff begins when a call gets out to police.

Michael Chiklis is good as the gang's leader, who all happen to beBritish for some reason. Hearing him effectively using an Englishaccent was a bit strange, while it was convincing it was at times alittle distracting. Nonetheless the acting was very good all around, asis the camera work & audio. If they did happen to have any budgetconstraints it didn't show at any point during the film. All that said,the film really didn't put me on the edge of my seat, it wasn't anintense thriller nor did it try to be. My curiosity of the big pictureis what kept me engaged, as the story was entertaining & has enoughtwists & turns to keep the viewer from being bored. It's not a fastpaced thriller, as it often cuts back and forth to explain exactly whatbrought all these characters together. IMO it is definitely worth arental if you're looking to pass some time. I give it a 6.7/10
