Only God Forgives (2013) Review by Some random dude from France
Critics have gone way too hard on this movie. Lots of violent, strangeet slow films have been presented at the Cannes film festival since itscreation but yet every time a film pushes the boundaries of violencewhile keeping its own style, most critics go mad and sometimes shout atthe screening, even leaving the theater before the end and calling it"outrageous". This film, along with "Anti-Christ" is a perfect exampleof the type of scandals that go on at Cannes for quite stupid reasons.

First of all, forget about Drive. If you know Nicolas Winding Refn'sstyle and like it then you'll enjoy this movie but if you've only seenDrive and believe this is going to be in the same style (because of thesame actor, similar cinematography, same musical style...) believe meyou'll be disappointed. The trailer might give this impression, butthis film is very different. The director had already made other moviesjust like this, but they did not encounter a really large audience. Hisworks were mostly known by cinephiles, artsy people and intellectualsinterested in film analysis (in a general way of course). Drive was hisfirst really big success and also his first film taking place inAmerica, starring a worldwide known star (Gosling) and going deep intoits message while keeping a more specific style than his other films.

Here Refn feels a lot more philosophical, and comes back to hisoriginal style in directing films such as Valhalla Rising : greatvisuals, slow-pasted action, scenes that seem a bit detached fromone-another, deep character development, little dialogue, extremeviolence mixed with soft and/or trance-electro music... all of whichare here to deal with philosophical, deep, hard subjects like revenge, good and bad, mother/son relationship etc...

When it comes to the acting Gosling does not disappoints however thistime Refn wanted to do the opposite that he did in Drive : showing theweakness of his character. Also, even though he does pull-off a veryconvincing performance, Kristin Scott Thomas is surprisinglycaptivating and gives her character a much more "real" dimension thanit could have been (like it is most of the time, when a woman issupposed to play a drug-lord badass). But saving the best for the end,Vithaya Pansringarm, an actor totally unknown to me until know, playswonderfully his role as the mystical bad guy, and really did surpriseme by the quality of his acting. He completely understood the movie'satmosphere and makes his character feel mysterious and fascinating.

To sum-up this is a very atmospheric, deep movie with greatactors/actresses and dealing with difficult and serious themes, withsome philosophical analysis possible, but definitely not in the samestyle as Drive, even though it has some similarities with it.

Only God Forgives (2013) Review by yaldish from Michigan, Detroit
I do understand why people hate it, that also means that I understandwhy people love it - I am one of them.

This movie was shot by cinematographer Larry Smith who also worked withKubrick in 'Eyes wide shut', he made an extraordinary job shooting thispicture because it was beautiful to Streaming from the beginning to theend. But not only was it beautiful to Streaming, it was also an amazingmovie experience. If you are a fan of movies and a fan of NicolasWinding Refn then I think you will absolutely love this.

I read that a lot of people are complaining about this movie being thinon story and whatnot, well, let me put it like this; if Refn wanted a"story" he would give it a "story". He doesn't have anything to proveon that point because he already showed us that he can do it if hewants to, and I think once you let go of that then it will be a lotmore easier to enjoy and experience this movie.

The atmosphere in this movie was really something, it was almost as ifyou were a part of it thanks to this movie being very slow paced, andthat's why I've always been a big fan of slow-paced movies. "Chang",who is "God", was so coldblooded that even I as a viewer did feel thatit will be impossible for "Julian" to actually try to kill him - andthen that last fighting sequence came. All the actors did a very goodjob and gave convincing performances, meaning that they didn't have todo more than what was already in the film. And I loved the fact thatour protagonist got beaten down to a point where we couldn't see hisnormal face, and I liked the relationship that Julian (Ryan Gosling)and Crystal had (Kristen Thomas) because I could feel thatmother-to-son love type of relationship even though it was very tense. This movie also had very good soundtracks which added another greatlayer to it. I guess if David Lynch were to make an extremely violentmovie, I think it would look something like this, there were indeedsome Lynch-moments in there and some Kubrick shots which I absolutelyloved. As much as this movie made me cringe I could not stop enjoyingit, it was all in a positive way. I think Refn at one point called thisa Thai-western about a man who is fighting against god, and I couldn'tstop thinking about that whilst I was Streaminging it because that'sexactly what it is.

People can trash this movie all they want, we even had two peoplewalking out of the theater. But the fact that some critics gave it a100/100 and others gave it below 50/100 should tell you a lot. But atthe end of the day, I think if you really want to know what you thinkof this film, you will have to go and see it for yourself.

Only God Forgives (2013) Review by Auke Briek from Netherlands
Nicolas Winding Refn's new feature, Only God Forgives is a good film, his best offering I've seen so far. This is not only style oversubstance, but (like Spring Breakers) also style as substance. A grimmood is created through long stretches of brooding red lights reflectedon faces, while the violent outbursts seem to be discharges of visuallyovercharged surroundings, with electricity built up after long silenceswith lots of eye candy, stylized framing and an excitingelectronic/ambient score by Cliff Martinez. All of this underlines thedesires, motivations, and emotional experiences of a bunch of messed upcharacters. So you could say that, the mood and the meaning are meantto be "the residue" of the style, just as Korine explained hisintention for Spring Breakers. This is why both films are not emptystylistic offerings, but resonate on a deep affective level. And,because a non-narrative substance can be incorporated into the style,to pursue the ideal of style over narrative substance is notsuperficial per se. What is also positive, is that unlike Drive (andBronson), the narrative substance that remains is not messy per se,just lightweight. Although the story is quite simple and pure inexecution, it is certainly strange, abstract, and a little drawn out.Especially the beginning relies mostly on mood, leaving little time fortraditional story-telling. This worked for me, but I can understandthat many others find it tedious. There is a lot of ambiguity, mostlyhaving to do with the mysterious motivations behind Gosling'scharacter. He has the same elation on his face as in Drive, but moreperverted and strange this time. Apart from this there are a fewabstract/absurd elements in the story: for instance, certain charactersmeet each other in paradoxical and inexplicable ways. But to me thiswas more a matter of deliberate ambiguity and mystery than messiness. The film is also extremely violent. Not constantly, more like a seriesof intense hits after long silences. This is not primarily used toentertain or bludgeon the viewer, but more to convey the moral conflictgoing on in Gosling's character. And the final scene may have feltcompletely weird and ridiculous to many people (I heard much laughterin disbelief), but to me it made perfect sense, albeit in an absurdway, because it seemed to be the only resolution to the conflict goingon in his mind. The song at the end just felt like the perfectcontinuation of the beautiful absurdity just before it.
